Pilates for Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is very common among the aging population. I wanted to share a few of the exercises that I often choose for my osteo clients. This would be a great and safe workout for almost any body type, but is specific for an aging body (or a less conditioned body) with osteoporosis. This is also a great guide if you're an instructor and wondering what you can do with your osteo client. With osteoporosis there are certain movements that you want to avoid in order to protect the spine: flexion, loaded flexion and flexion with rotation. Essentially, bending the spine forward, bending forward with weight, and twisting while bending are movements that you want to stay away from. However, we still want to balance and strengthen the body - and there are many ways that we can still do so!

In the video below, I have put together a small extension-biased program that can be done at home with very little equipment. It's about 20-25 minutes long and uses small

props (a resistance band, a small pilates ball and a yoga block). Let me know what you think! As always, questions and comments are welcome!

Enjoy!
