How to Deal with a Slowing Metabolism

Updated: Jun 26, 2019

As we age, our BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) naturally begins to decrease. Why does this happen? A big part of that is a result of declining lean muscle mass. That is why it's so important to keep active!

Here are a few tips to help you take control over your metabolism:

1. Start moving. A sedentary lifestyle will most definitely have an effect on your weight. Strength train at least 3 days week. Adding muscle will not only help increase your daily metabolic rate (you can burn more calories even when you're not active), but it will prevent bone loss.

2. Already working out? Try increasing the intensity a little bit: instead of just walking, try inclined walking. Increase your speed or try different speed intervals.

3. Hydrate! Make sure you are drinking enough water every day. Proper hydration is necessary for all chemical processes in your body.

4. Make sure you are eating enough protein on a daily basis. This will help support muscle repair and growth.

5. Make sure you are eating ENOUGH calories. A calorie deficit is ideal for weight loss. But starving yourself will not get you the long-term results that you desire. It can also damage your metabolism.
